At 5pm the Germans opened a violent artillery bombardment of their trenches after blowing a mine under the Mound, a heap of spoil from an old nearby brickworks . They then launched an infantry attack and captured the village.  At 2am the next morning, 15th March, 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers and other battalions from 27th Division, launched a counter attack and retook St Eloi but were unable to recapture the mound. One of their casualties during these two days was George Allen who was killed on 14th March.
